Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS)

For those applications needing high temperature stability, broad chemical resistance, stiffness, strength and creep resistance at elevated temperature, PPS is an excellent candidate.

Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS) is a high-temperature (Tm =285°C) thermoplastic material that offers an excellent combination of thermal, mechanical and chemical resistance. It is inherently flame resistant and is virtually unaffected by a broad range of chemicals, even over prolonged periods and at elevated temperatures. It is commercially available in two varieties -- branched (cross-linked and cured) and linear. Linear PPS is a second generation product that offers easy processing, excellent lot-to-lot consistency and high strength and toughness. It is available in a range of molecular weights that allow it to be used in a variety of processes from thin section injection molding to blow molding. It also has low ionic impurities and is colorable.

Injection molding grades are available with glass fiber reinforcements and glass fiber/ mineral combinations, and numerous other grades have been formulated with other additives to meet a variety of end-use requirements. Such products are widely used in replacing traditional engineering materials such as metals, thermosets and ceramics in

  • Automotive applications - powertrain components, pumps, fuel rails,  sensors
  • Electrical/electronic components  - surface mount connectors and chip carriers
  • Industrial/mechanical applications - blower and pump parts, impellers, flowmeters
  • Consumer/appliance equipment - electric heater grills, hot comb parts, non-stick coatings, power tool parts,  microwave components, and insulators

Linear PPS polymer can be extruded, blow molded or compression molded into blocks, rods and other stock shapes that are often used for prototyping. Unfilled linear polymer can also be melt spun and melt blown to produce fibers and fabrics that are used for conveyor belts, flame resistant clothing and filtration media.

Ticona offers numerous reinforced grades of Fortron® PPS, a linear polymer, for injection molding, and also makes a range of unfilled polymers to meet different application requirements.
