Electrical Components

Designers of electrical components require materials for both insulation and mechanical function. Ticona offers a range of products to help meet these requirements in fractional horsepower motors, electromechanical controls and power distribution equipment. Manufacturers in this area can use engineering plastics to replace metal, to consolidate parts and to achieve manufacturing simplification. Further, with Ticona’s materials and expertise to help them, they can develop devices with improved or special operating capabilities.  

For switchgear, timer and contactor housings, as well as motor components, flame retarded grades of Celanex® polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) have a long history of performance, while for timer mechanical elements such as gears and springs, Celcon® and Hostaform® acetal copolymers (POM) are excellent candidates. When higher temperatures are encountered, as for instance in a dryer motor switch, Fortron® polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) has a key role to play. The high flow of Fortron PPS also makes it useful for long, thin parts, and its environmental resistance earns it a place in contactor applications.

Vectra® liquid crystal polymer (LCP) brings its special qualities to this end-use market. An inherently flame-retardant polymer, the extremely low shrinkage of Vectra LCP makes it a good candidate for injection-molded gears with tight tolerances and electrical functionality. The low shrinkage of Vectra LCP makes it also a good candidate for overmolding such parts as motor stators, where flame retardancy, insulation properties and temperature resistance are also required.
