Ongoing redesign of fractional horsepower electric motors is focused on increased efficiency and improved performance. One way to get these results is by replacing metals and thermoset resins with thermoplastics.  Ticona’s engineering plastics are playing key roles in this process, by helping designers lessen part count and reduce costs by simplifying assembly. Added benefits include lower noise level and longer motor life.

Among the applications where Ticona’s resins help motor engineers are motor end-shields, rotors and stators. Celanex® polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) is used in these applications to achieve parts consolidation and cost reduction.  Of particular interest is the damping characteristic of Celanex PBT that provides an added advantage - less motor noise.

Fortron® polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is used in rotors and stators for brushless permanent magnet motors for its 180 - 240°C (356 - 464° F) thermal ratings, electrical tracking resistance properties and UL94 V-0 rating.

In another stator design, the high flow and low shrinkage of Vectra® liquid crystal polymer (LCP) meets the stringent requirements of an encapsulation application.
