Stock Shapes, Profiles, Sheet, and Pipe

Stock Shapes and Profiles
Specialist extruders can provide a variety of semi-finished products in the form of rods, slabs, profiles, sheets, strips and tubing.  These formed shapes are used directly as pins, rollers, blocks, slabs or other parts in mechanical equipment.  They are also used as machining feedstock.

With downstream machining, stock shape feedstock is used to makes washers, tubes, bushings, bearings, wear pads, pulleys, valves, valve seats and fittings.  More complex operations yield parts such as gears, sprockets, guides and pump parts.  Machining parts from stock is typically done where the production run is very small, as in manufacturing of prototypes, or where the final part tolerances are so tight as to be difficult or impossible to achieve with injection molding.

The following Ticona engineering resins can be obtained in various stock forms and shapes:

  • Celcon® and Hostaform® acetal copolymers
  • GUR® ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene
  • Celanex® thermoplastic polyester
  • Riteflex® thermoplastic polyester elastomer
  • Fortron® polyphenylene sulfide
  • Celstran® long fiber reinforced thermoplastic

Sheet Extrusion
Sheet product may be continuously produced by extrusion (and also, one unit at a time, by compression molding).  For sheet extrusion, the output dimensional range is determined by the equipment geometry and motor power.  Equipment geometry includes such variables as barrel size, screw profile, die dimensions and take-up size, and speed.  Draw-down ratio is also a factor.  Sheet material may be rolled up or cut as it is produced.  Some materials and thicknesses may have to be cut on production because of sheet stiffness or the propensity of the material to take a set if rolled up.

Sheet produced from Ticona resins is used for machined or thermoformed parts in many industries.  For instance, sheets of GUR are often ideal for lining silos, chutes, dump trucks, rail wagons, or ship’s holds because of their non-stick properties, low temperatures, and resistance to chemicals and abrasion.
